Himachal Pradesh is currently facing a double whammy of weather. While the high peaks have begun to be covered with a blanket of snow, a thick layer of fog in the lower areas has slowed daily life. Fresh snowfall in the upper reaches of Kullu, Manali, and Lahaul has increased the chill in the air, while reduced visibility in the plains districts is affecting traffic.
A significant change in the weather was observed in the state on Saturday. Light snowfall was recorded on the Pir Panjal mountain ranges, including the Rohtang, Baralacha, and Kunzum passes. This snowfall has led to a sharp drop in temperatures. In 17 cities across the state, the mercury has fallen below 5 degrees Celsius.
In areas such as Tabo, Kalpa, and Kukumseri, temperatures have dropped below zero, resulting in severe cold conditions. In the capital, Shimla, intermittent cloud cover and cold winds have made daily life difficult for residents.
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the next four days in seven districts located in the plains and lower altitudes. Dense fog is expected during the morning and evening hours, and drivers have been advised to exercise caution. However, the department has predicted that the weather will remain mostly dry across the state until January 5.
On January 6, due to the activation of a western disturbance, light rain or snowfall is expected in higher-altitude areas. From January 7 to 9, the weather is likely to remain clear across the state, with bright sunshine expected. Although nights will remain cold for the next two days, temperatures are forecast to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius thereafter, providing some relief from the cold.
