Reading rooms will be set up for the public in 544 government schools in Himachal Pradesh. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state government will launch a campaign to promote education in the state. In the reading room, local youth will be able to prepare for competitive examinations. Newspapers and other books will also be made available for the elderly and others to read. On Thursday, the Directorate of Higher Education issued letters to all district deputy directors to implement the scheme.
A committee will also be formed to run the campaign successfully and ensure active participation of the public. For the development of the culture of reading and teaching in Himachal, the Chief Minister in the budget speech of 2024-25 had announced the launch of a massive mass campaign named Padho Himachal. Along with schools, rural and urban communities have to be involved in the campaign. Under the campaign, reading rooms will be built for general readers and especially for the youth in 544 educational institutions of the state.
Eight schools each will be selected for setting up reading rooms in all the 68 assembly constituencies. The directorate has asked to select schools which already have reading room facilities. The principals of the selected schools have also been asked to make necessary arrangements to facilitate studies for students, villagers and youth.
