‘Atal Swaranjali’ celebrates the legacy of Bharat Ratna poet with a powerful cultural presentation
Shimla, March 29, 2026
A grand musical dance drama based on 10 selected poems of Bharat Ratna poet and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was held at the historic Gaiety Theatre, Shimla, on Sunday evening at 5:30 PM. The program, titled “Atal Swaranjali,” was directed by renowned Shimla-based artist Mrs. Poonam Sharma, Director of Kala Sangam.

The event beautifully showcased the poetic brilliance and philosophical depth of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose writings continue to inspire generations. Through a blend of music, dance, and theatrical expression, artists paid tribute to his timeless creations and vision of an inclusive and culturally rich India.
Born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Vajpayee inherited literary excellence from his father, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, a noted Hindi and Braj poet. Inspired by great literary works and nationalist ideologies, he developed a unique poetic voice early in life. Alongside his political journey, Vajpayee remained deeply connected to literature and journalism, contributing to publications such as Panchjanya, Rashtradharma, and Veer Arjun.

The presentation featured some of his most iconic lines, including “Haar nahi manunga, raar nahi thaanunga,” “Kadam milakar chalna hoga,” and “Aao phir se diya jalayein,” leaving the audience deeply moved and inspired.
In a special segment, a historic theatrical adaptation of “Rashmirathi,” the legendary work of Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh ‘Dinkar,’ was also performed, marking its 75th anniversary year. This was the first-ever such presentation at Gaiety Theatre, making the event even more memorable.
Neeraj Kumar, President of the Ramdhari Singh Dinkar Memorial Trust, announced that 100 such “Atal Swaranjali” programs will be organized across prominent locations in India to keep Vajpayee’s legacy alive. The Shimla event was the 21st in this nationwide series.
The program witnessed the presence of distinguished guests, including the Zonal Manager of Punjab National Bank, who emphasized that literature and culture play a vital role in building a creative and conscious society. He encouraged youth to read Rashmirathi, describing it as a source of inspiration and enlightenment.
The Kathak performances and dramatic enactments by Kala Sangam artists received widespread appreciation from the audience. The evening concluded with heartfelt gratitude extended to all performers and special recognition for Mrs. Poonam Sharma for her outstanding direction.
