Cottonians smash their own school records showing strength, bravery and sporting skills.
Bishop Cotton School, Shimla (BCS) celebrated its 165th Sports Day 2024 by beating 6 of their own school sporting records. (*The event took place on Friday 25th September).
The school has just been ranked Number 1 legacy boys Boarding School by EducationWorld a market leader education magazine.
The heritage school is celebrating 165 years since its foundation in 1859 and prides itself on the amount of sports in the curriculum.

The Sports Captain Sarthak K started the ceremony by lighting the traditional flame of the BCS Olympic torch. The boys then did an impressive marchpast the chief guest, who was an old boy currently working as a Colonel in the Indian Army.
The event celebrates the school’s philosophy of character development through exposure to team sports and extra-curricular activities.
Sporting winners
Mr Gurprit Singh, Director of Sports at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla said “The highlights of this year were 6 new records being shattered by the youngest boy in school to the eldest boy. The oldest school sporting records date back to the year 2002. A remarkable achievement indeed, and lots of encouragement by Chief Guest, who himself is an old boy of the school.”
Sports day teaches discipline to students and includes track and field events, March past and gymnastics display. Sports day promotes physical activity and encourages maximum participation by all students to get involved in sports.
The overall sports award was won on points by Ibbetson House, who also won the Proficiency Cup.
The Victor Ludorum Cup, which is the ‘Champion’ of the day, was awarded to Mukul S. of Class 8, aged 13, so congratulations to him.
Daredevil sports stunts
One of the highlights of the day was the daring ‘hoop of fire’ display. Cottonian gymnasts have been in training for months for this daredevil event which involves jumping through a blazing ‘hoop of fire’ and landing in a forward roll. It requires strength, bravery and timing.
Legacy school routines
As a heritage school, many of the traditional routines have been in place since its foundation in 1859 by Bishop George Cotton. Students wake up early for physical training (PT) every day and take part in seventeen sports including shooting, boxing, rock climbing, swimming and obstacle course in the school’s forest.
The Sports Day events include a gymnastics display, PT and house marching competitions, long jump, high jump, discus and javelin throwing and of course, the many track events fiercely contested between the four different houses.
