The Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) event focusing on recent advancements in hematological disorders. The event aimed to cover both benign conditions such as hemophilia and thrombocytopenia, as well as malignant disorders including lymphoma and myeloma.
The CME was well-attended by residents and consultants from various departments including Radiotherapy and Oncology, Medicine, Pediatrics, and Pathology. In addition, experts from Tata Memorial Centre, Mullanpur, Punjab and Command Hospital, Lucknow, U.P. were present to share their extensive knowledge and experience, providing valuable insights into the latest developments in the field.
Dr. Rajeev Sandal, the clinical hemato-oncologist at IGMC, emphasized the importance of updating medical professionals on the evolving treatment protocols for hematological disorders. Dr. Sandal, who joined IGMC in 2020 after completing his DM in Clinical Hematology from PGIMER, Chandigarh, has been pivotal in managing these complex cases.
The CME highlighted the significant burden of hematological malignancies in the state. The hemato-oncology clinic at IGMC annually treats approximately 12 to 15 patients with leukemia and around 30 to 35 patients with lymphoma. The discussions and knowledge shared during the event are expected to enhance the capabilities of the attending medical professionals, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes in the region. The event emphasized the importance of continuous medical education and interdisciplinary collaboration in the fight against hematological disorders.
