Shimla
In an age of fast-paced cinema and urban narratives, Shimla-born actor and theatre artist Happy Sharma turns the lens towards the mountains not just to tell a story, but to revive a feeling. His directorial debut short film “Gharat” is a poetic tribute to Himachal’s village life, traditions, and the quiet beauty of human connections.
With over 20 years of experience in theatre, films, and television, Sharma has carved a space for himself in the entertainment industry. From notable Bollywood films like Black Friday, Dhamaal, Total Dhamaal, Sanam Re, 83 World Cup, to appearing in around 80 television commercials and popular TV shows such as Ek Ghar Banaunga, JJ Jasoos, and Guturgun, his journey reflects both versatility and dedication.
But “Gharat” marks a turning point, a deeply personal project where Happy Sharma steps behind the camera to tell a story close to his roots.
At the heart of the film lies the traditional Gharat a water-powered flour mill found in the hills,a space that once echoed with laughter, conversations, and shared lives. More than just a setting, it becomes a symbol of community, simplicity, and the rhythm of rural existence.
The narrative unfolds through Kavya, a city-bred young woman who returns to her ancestral village after years. As she wanders through winding mountain paths, capturing moments on her camera, she stumbles upon a gharat and an unexpected encounter with Kamlu, a humble mill worker, covered in flour yet radiating innocence.
What follows is not a loud love story, but a gentle unfolding of emotions unspoken, pure, and rooted in simplicity. The presence of Raunki adds light-hearted charm, balancing the film’s emotional depth with subtle humor.
Through its characters and setting, “Gharat” asks quiet yet powerful questions- Can modern perceptions understand rural innocence? Can fleeting encounters leave lasting impressions? Or do such moments simply dissolve into memories, like mist in the mountains?
Directed and written by Happy Sharma, the film is produced by Krishna Pimple. Cinematography by Hanish Sharma beautifully captures the untouched landscapes, while Ajay Saklani’s editing and Lalit Kumar Singh’s background score enhance the film’s emotional resonance.
The film stars Prabhat Sharma (Kamlu), Chandni Thakur (Kavya), and Sarita Handa (Nani), delivering performances that feel organic and deeply connected to the setting.
Speaking about his vision, Happy Sharma shares that “Gharat is not just a film, it is an experience of the hills, where relationships grow in innocence, and life flows with nature.”
The team has also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the local communities of Himachal Pradesh, whose support and warmth played a crucial role in bringing authenticity to the story.
Now streaming on YouTube, “Gharat” invites viewers to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their roots, their memories, and the timeless charm of village life.
