Power generation in the projects has dropped by thirty percent as a result of Himachal Pradesh receiving eighteen percent less rainfall than usual during the monsoon season. Himachal has chosen to take power from Punjab and Delhi due to a decline in power generation. In order to address the power constraint, Himachal will begin importing 25 lakh units of power per day from both states on October 15. Simultaneously, Himachal also ceased granting authority to other states when winter arrived.
At this point, Himachal will only return the electricity it lent to other states in the summer. The government will also buy electricity from foreign sources if there is a significant demand for it. Himachal Pradesh requires 360 lakh units of power per day, however, only 340 lakh units are available. 500 lakh units of power were produced up until September. Due to the scarcity of water in the rivers, production fell by roughly 160 lakh units per day as soon as the monsoon season finished. As a result, by March 2025, Himachal will return the electricity it borrowed from the other states throughout the summer.
Under this, electricity is being taken back from both the states through banking. Right now the requirement of electricity in the state is not very high, hence the process of taking back the supply given to other states will also be started in the coming days. On the other hand, if the demand for electricity in the state increases further, then firstly Himachal government will buy the free electricity received as royalty from the projects. Due to the decrease in the amount of water in the rivers, the power projects are not able to produce at full capacity.
