Himachal Pradesh Council for Science Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE), Shimla and Punjab State Council of Science & Technology Chandigarh are jointly organizing North Regional Training Workshop on “Teaching Mathematics through Origami” w.e.f. 24-27 April, 2023 at State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute, Mashobra, Shimla. It is proposed to train school mathematics teachers to popularize the teaching of mathematics through interesting and fun filled activities. The workshop would include history of Origami, explanation of mathematical concepts that can be taught through Origami.
Ori from origami meaning “folding” and kami meaning “paper” (kami changes to gami due to rendaku) is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD at the latest and was popularized in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.
The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The most well-known origami Model is probably the Japanese paper crane. Origami has been used for Years to popularize arts such as creating animal shapes, figures etc Origami Has also been one of the most popular methods to teach geometrical and Mathematical theorems. The art of origami is truly hands-on learning. As Students use their fine motor skills to fold and crease paper into fun shapes and structures, they build skills involving spatial reasoning, following precise directions in sequence, fractions, geometry and more.
NCSTC, DST Govt. of India has developed and implemented training module on mathematics learning through Origami which has been a very successful program for many years. The objective of this workshop is to train school mathematics teachers from all over the state to popularize the teaching of mathematics through this interesting and fun filled activity. We hope that this workshop will be useful for the participants who must have learnt to teach mathematics through this interesting and fun-filled activity
