Shimla: Renovation work of Shimla’s historic Jakhu Temple will begin soon, as the Himachal Pradesh government has granted in-principle approval to the project. The estimated cost of the renovation is ₹5 crore 67 lakh 14 thousand 944. The project will now be forwarded to the state government through the Shimla Municipal Corporation for final cabinet approval.
While granting in-principle approval, the state government clarified that the entire expenditure will be borne by the Shri Hanuman Ji Temple Trust, Jakhu, from its own resources. In recent years, the number of devotees visiting the temple has increased significantly, leading to difficulties due to limited infrastructure.
Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Anupam Kashyap, said the project approval has been received from the state government. Under the renovation plan, major works include the renovation of the yajna shala, shoe house, langar (community kitchen) building, expansion in front of Lord Hanuman’s statue, restoration of the park, renovation of the temple office, railing work in the kirtan hall, and repair of public toilets. In addition, six new shops will be constructed within the temple परिसर, and a children’s park will also be developed.
He added that the remaining formalities for construction will be completed soon. Once finished, the project will provide modern facilities to devotees, ensuring a more comfortable and convenient experience.
Yajna Shala Construction:
As per the project, a new yajna shala will be constructed in the temple complex. Built in mandap style, it will feature 16 pillars, 32 roof-supporting columns, a kund, vedi, toran, flag and other elements, all designed according to traditional Hindu architectural styles.
Shoe House Facility:
A new shoe house is also proposed, covering an area of 22.41 square meters. It will include a counter, shoe racks, and a token system for devotees.
Parking Facility:
A new parking facility will be developed within the temple complex at an estimated cost of around ₹40 lakh. This will help resolve long-standing parking issues faced by devotees.
History of Jakhu Temple:
According to temple priest B.P. Sharma, during the battle between Lord Ram and Ravana, Lakshman was rendered unconscious after being struck by a powerful weapon fired by Ravana’s son Meghnad. On medical advice, Hanuman set out to bring the Sanjeevani herb from the Himalayas. While traveling through the sky, Hanuman noticed a Yaksha sage meditating on Jakhu Hill and stopped there to seek directions. After receiving the information, Hanuman promised to return, and it was from this place that he was guided to the mountain where Sanjeevani could be found.
