JUIT, Waknaghat- On February 22nd and 23rd (Wednesday and Thursday), SIAM JUIT chapter successfully conducted their first offline event on ‘Introduction to Project Euler’.
This was a two-day event. On the first day, SIAM JUIT conducted a presentation on Project Euler in which its importance, need in the computer science background was discussed. Next day, there was a coding contest which was related to Project Euler.
There were cash prizes awarded in the coding contest worth Rs. 10k.
The presentation on the first day was attended by students, research scholars and faculty members of the University. The speakers for the lecture were Himanshu Dhumrash, research scholar in the Mathematics Department, also the PhD mentor of SIAM JUIT and Ayush Vaish,
President of SIAM JUIT. Initially, Himanshu Dhumrash introduced Project Euler and along with this, he described the importance of mathematical concepts that are essential to improve programming skills. Ayush followed the presentation with a hands-on problem-solving session.
Students attending the session gave their approaches for the problem given and Ayush helped them understand a better programming approach using basic mathematical concepts.
At the end of day one, Faculty Advisor Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Kumar Sehgal motivated the students for the next day’s coding round. He also told the students about opportunities in computational and applied mathematics.
On the second day, SIAM JUIT hosted a 2-hour coding contest on Hacker Rank for first a year and second-year students. The coding contest was designed such that mathematical concepts needed to be applied to solve them rather than brute force approaches.
Students participated in this event with full dedication. Faculty advisor, Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Kumar Sehgal also came to ensure the active participation of the students and to encourage them.
Honourable Vice chancellor , Prof. (Dr.) Rajendra Kumar Sharma also graced the students with his presence. He motivated the students to develop good coding skills for future events and opportunities.
Performance of the students was constantly being monitored. The students who finished the problems in a minimum amount of time were awarded with cash prizes.
First prize (₹5000)was bagged by Ansh Mehrotra (2nd year), Srishti (1st year) bagged second prize (₹3000), Third prize (₹2000) was given to Aman Srivastava (2nd year).
The prizes were distributed by the Vice Chancellor of Jaypee University of Information Technology, Prof. (Dr.) Rajendra Kumar Sharma and Faculty Coordinator, Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Kumar Sehgal.
All the participants were appreciated for taking part in the contest and the executive committee of the SIAM JUIT was also acknowledged for their efforts by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.)
Rajendra Kumar Sharma; Faculty Advisor, Prof. (Dr.) Vivek Sehgal and our Founding President, Achyut Tiwari. The event ended with the prize distribution ceremony and acknowledgement of all the members who helped in organising this event. This event proved that the hope for bridging the gap between programming concepts and mathematics is still alive and is in full swing.
