Governor gives nod to bill
Shimla: The tenure of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation will now be five years instead of the earlier two-and-a-half years after the Governor approved the amendment bill passed by the Himachal Pradesh Assembly.
With the Governor’s assent, the amendment to the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act has come into effect, allowing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to remain in office for the full five-year term of the municipal body.
Earlier, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were elected for a tenure of two-and-a-half years, leading to a change in leadership midway through the municipal corporation’s five-year term. The state government said the amendment aims to ensure administrative stability and better implementation of development works in urban local bodies.
The bill was passed during the recent session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. After receiving the Governor’s approval, the provision has now become law and will apply to municipal corporations in the state, including Shimla.
The move had also sparked political debate in the state, with the opposition raising objections during the discussion on the bill in the Assembly. However, with the Governor’s assent, the revised tenure provision has officially come into force.
