Lok Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh and famous film actress Kangana Ranaut has got a setback from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in an old dispute. The court has rejected the petition in which Kangana had sought to quash the defamation case going on against her in Bathinda court.
This case is of the year 2021, when the farmers’ movement was at its peak across the country. During this time, Kangana had made a tweet on social media, in which she shared a picture of an elderly woman and accused her of joining the protest by taking money. The name of that elderly woman is Mahinder Kaur, who is a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandia village in Bathinda district of Punjab and was 87 years old at that time. Kangana had written in her tweet that this is the same grandmother who was included in the “Powerful Women of India” by Time Magazine, and now she is available for Rs 100. She also said that the women involved in the farmers’ movement are sitting on dharna for nominal money. This tweet went viral on social media and became a subject of criticism across the country.
Mahinder Kaur strongly objected to Kangana’s statement. Talking to a local news channel, she said that Kangana has no idea of the reality of farming. She is crazy, what does she know about the hard work of a farmer? Work in our fields never ends, why would we go on a dharna for Rs 100? Mahinder Kaur said that she has worked hard in farming all her life and her dignity has been hurt by Kangana. She advised Kangana to recite Gurbani and said that it is wrong to accuse someone without reason.
After Kangana’s tweet, Mahinder Kaur filed a defamation case in Bathinda court on 4 January 2021. The hearing in this case went on for about 13 months and finally the court issued summons to Kangana and ordered her to appear. After this, Kangana filed a petition in the Punjab-Haryana High Court seeking cancellation of the proceedings of the lower court, but the High Court rejected it. However, the detailed order has not yet been made public by the court. Now the matter will again run in Bathinda Court. Kangana still has the option of appealing to the Supreme Court.
Female constable slapped at Chandigarh Airport
This is the same controversy which again gained momentum in June 2024, when CISF female constable Kulwinder Kaur slapped Kangana at Chandigarh Airport. The female constable had told the media that Kangana’s remarks during the farmers’ movement had hurt her, as her mother was also participating in that movement. Kulwinder said that my mother was in the farmers’ movement and Kangana had insulted her by saying this. Neither any FIR was registered regarding this incident nor did Kangana complain to the police.
