New Delhi:
In a significant ruling impacting higher education across the country, the Supreme Court of India”,”apex court of India has upheld the authority of the “University Grants Commission”,”higher education regulator India” (UGC), declaring that its regulations are binding on all universities and institutions.
The apex court observed that UGC regulations are framed under statutory powers to ensure uniformity and quality in higher education. Universities and state governments, the court said, cannot override or dilute these norms, particularly in matters related to faculty appointments, qualifications, promotions, and academic standards.
While acknowledging the autonomy of universities, the Supreme Court clarified that such autonomy cannot be exercised in violation of UGC regulations, which are meant to safeguard national academic interests.
The ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications for higher education institutions, especially those that have adopted policies inconsistent with UGC norms. Education experts believe the verdict will strengthen transparency, merit-based appointments, and uniform standards across universities.
