    Nauni: Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni, celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga with great enthusiasm at the university sports complex on Sunday. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members and staff, and highlighted this year’s theme- Yoga for Healthy Ageing, which emphasizes the role of yoga in maintaining physical vitality, mental clarity and emotional resilience throughout life.

    The programme was organized with experts from the Yogananda School of Spirituality and Happiness leading the yoga sessions. The visiting team included Head of Department Dr Nidheesh Yadav and faculty members Dr. Rama Mishra and Gautam Sahu.

    Dr. Devina Vaidya, Director of Research, welcomed the participants and spoke about the significance and origins of International Yoga Day. She said that while modern lifestyles have brought comfort and convenience, they have also contributed to stress and lifestyle-related ailments. Referring to the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ Dr. Vaidya emphasized that regular yoga practice can help individuals of all age groups maintain good health, improve flexibility and immunity, and promote mental well-being. She urged everyone to incorporate yoga into their daily routine to lead a balanced and stress-free life.

    The experts conducted a one-hour yoga and meditation session and shared insights on yoga, spirituality and simple living. They highlighted the importance of healthy food, sound sleep and the channelization of energy towards meaningful goals. Emphasizing that yoga is much more than physical exercise, they described it as a holistic way of life that promotes harmony between the body, mind and spirit. Dr. D.R. Bhardwaj, Dean of Students’ Welfare, proposed the vote of thanks.

    Participants were introduced to various yoga asanas, their proper techniques and associated health benefits. The programme concluded with a message encouraging participants to adopt yoga as a lifelong practice for healthy and active ageing. More than 250 individuals participated in the event, including university officers, heads of departments, faculty members, staff, students, NCC cadets, NSS and Scouts and Guides volunteers, along with a team from the Botanical Survey of India.

    The celebration reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting holistic health and wellness and echoed the timeless message that yoga is a powerful tool for ensuring healthy ageing and enhancing the quality of life.

    In a proud achievement for Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, five current and former students have been selected to interact with the Hon’ble President of India at New Delhi, on June 2, 2026.

     

    The selected scholars are Abhishek Negi, Dr. Jyoti Choudhary, Dr. Suman Bodh, Dr. Sudarshana and Dr. Mohd Hussnain. They have been chosen by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, for a special interaction with the President as part of the Janjatiya Garima Utsav 2026 celebrations. The event is being organized under the Ministry’s initiative to recognize meritorious Scheduled Tribe (ST) students who have benefited from the National Fellowship for Scheduled Tribes (NFST). Around 200 outstanding tribal scholars from across the country will participate in the interaction.

     

    The programme is being held during “Birsa Lives in New Bharat Week” (May 25–June 2), commemorating the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and highlighting the contributions of tribal communities to nation-building. The initiative aims to inspire tribal youth towards education, leadership, research, innovation, and active participation in the vision of a developed India.

     

    Among the selected scholars, Abhishek Negi is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Agribusiness Management at Nauni. His research focuses on the socio-economic conditions and emerging realities of gig workers in India. The university’s recent alumni selected for the programme have also excelled in their respective fields. Dr. Jyoti Choudhary completed her B.Sc. (Hons.) Forestry and Ph.D. in Agroforestry, Dr. Suman Bodh earned a doctorate in Fruit Science, Dr. Sudarshana specialized in Microbiology, and Dr. Mohd Hussnain completed his Ph.D. in Forestry. All are currently serving as faculty members in various universities and colleges.

     

    Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.S. Baweja congratulated the students and alumni on their selection for this prestigious national event.

    Nauni, Western Sydney Universities hold discussions on Dual Degree Programs

    A delegation comprising two members from Western Sydney University (WSU) recently visited Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni to hold further discussions on dual degree programs and potential collaborations between the institutions. Professor Linda Taylor, Pro Vice Chancellor of WSU, was joined by Kopal, a representative from WSU’s New Delhi office, for the one-day visit to Nauni. Professor Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, Vice Chancellor of Nauni, welcomed the visiting delegation. Notably, the Deans of all four constituent colleges, including Neri and Thunag, along with statutory officers of the university actively participated in the discussions.

    The dialogue encompassed various academic initiatives such as 3+1 and 3+1+1 degree programs, as well as dual degree offerings in MSc and PhD programs. Additionally, discussions regarding fellowship opportunities and eligibility criteria were conducted in detail. Subsequently, Professor Linda Taylor engaged with undergraduate students of Nauni, shedding light on the collaborative efforts between the two universities and the fellowship avenues accessible to them.

    Last year, the two universities formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at jointly offering dual degree programs in BSc, MSc, and doctoral levels. These programs are tailored to enrich students’ employability, skill sets, and comprehension of technology-driven fields such as horticulture, forestry, biotechnology, and food technology. Furthermore, the partnership entails collaborative research ventures, joint academic activities including conferences, seminars, and symposia, shared publications and scholarly endeavours, collaborative academic programs, joint curriculum development, and opportunities for both faculty and student mobility.

    फल पौधों को लगाने का समय:

    शीतोष्ण फल पौधों को लगाने का आजकल उपयुक्त समय है। इस वर्ष लम्बे सूखे की परिस्थिति को ध्यान में रखते हुए वर्षा होने के पश्चात ही पौधारोपण का कार्य करें। यह फल पौधे मार्च के महीने तक रोपित किये जा सकते हैं लेकिन जनवरी के महीने में इन फल पौधों का रोपण उपयुक्त रहेगा। टेढ़े-मेढ़े पहाड़ी और अधिक ढलान वाले क्षेत्रों में साधारणतया फल पौधों को कन्टूर विधि द्वारा लगायें। जिन बागावानों के पास छोटे-छोटे खेत बने हो या बनाये जा सके, इन खेतों के मध्य में उचित दूरी पर फल पौधों को लगाएं। खेतों की ढलान अन्दर की ओर रखें जिससे वर्षा के पानी का सही उपयोग हो सके और भूमि कटाव भी कम हो। निचले क्षेत्रों तथा समतल घाटियों में वर्गाकार या फिर षटभुजाकार विधि से पौधे लगाने की रूपरेखा बनायें। सघन बागवानी के लिए फल पौधे वहीं लगाएं जहां भूमि अधिक उपजाऊ, समतल तथा अधिक उत्पादन क्षमता वाली हो, सिंचाई सुविधा उपलब्ध हो और तेज हवा भी न चलती हो। पौधों को एक दूसरे से अनुमोदित दूरी पर लगाना जरूरी है। यह दूरी फल की किस्म, मूलवृंत की किस्म, मिट्टी, जलवायु तथा काट-छांट की विधियों पर निर्भर करेगी। स्वनिष्फलता वाली किस्मों के साथ 25 से 33 प्रतिशत परागण क़िस्मों को अवशय लगाएं। जिसके लिए विषेशज्ञ से परामर्श लेना चाहिए।

    जड़ों के विकास के लिए यह आवशयक है कि उन्हें फैलने के लिए जरूरी स्थान और आहार मिले। इसलिए नियत स्थान पर एक घन मीटर (1x1x1 मी.) का गड्ढा बनाएं। गड्ढे की मिट्टी को 10-12 दिन तक खुला रहने दें ताकि धूप लग सके। इससे हानिकारक जीवाणु तथा कीड़े नष्ट हो जाते हैं। पौधा लगाने से लगभग 15-20 दिन पहले गड्ढा मिट्टी से भरें और 20-30 किलोग्राम गली सड़ी गोबर की खाद तथा आधा किलोग्राम सुपर फास्फेट भी डालें। इसके उपरांत पानी डालें ताकि मिट्टी ठीक ढंग से बैठ जाये।

    फल पौधों को लगाते समय जड़ों को उनकी सही दिशा में फैला देना चाहिए। पौधों को पौधशाला की भांति ही स्वाभाविक गहराई तक दबा कर रोपित करें। मौसम की परिस्थिति को ध्यान में रखते हुए फल पौधों को लगाने के पश्चात् इनकी सिंचाई अवश्य करें और इसमें मल्च का उपयोग करें, जिससे की नमी को ज्यादा समय तक संजोकर रखा जा सके। कॉलर रॉट बीमारी से बचाव के लिए पौधे में कलम के जोड़ को भूमि के धरातल से लगभग 20-25 सै.मी. ऊँचा रखें। इसी प्रकार नाशीकीटों जैसे सैंजोस्केल तथा वूली एफिड से बचाव के लिए पौधों को तेल (हॉर्टिकल्चर मिनरल ऑइल) के घोल या कीटनाशी घोल में डुबोएं या इनका छिड़काव करें।

    प्राकृतिक खेती के तहत परामर्श

    सुभाष पालेकर प्राकृतिक खेती के तहत बागीचों में नमी बनाए रखने व खरपतवार को रोकने के लिए पौधों के तौलिए व वापसा में सूखी घास या अंतर फसल के अवशेषों से साल में 3-4 बार आच्छादन के रूप में इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए। पौधों के आसपास पानी व हवा का अनुपात व हवा का प्रभाव सही रखने के लिए पौधों से 3-5 फीट की दूरी पर चार इंच गहरी नाली बनानी चाहिए। वर्ष में चार बार पौधे के मुख्य तने को धूप से बचाने व मृदा जनित बीमारियों से रोकथाम के लिए लेप का इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए। मिट्टी की उर्वरता को बढ़ाने के लिए जीवामृत का पौधों पर छिड़काव व वापसा की सिंचाई (21 दिनों के अंतराल पर) व घन जीवामृत को वर्ष में 2-3 बार मिट्टी में 6.4 किलोग्राम प्रति बीघा के हिसाब से मिलना चाहिए।

    The Department of Environmental Science, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni in collaboration with MANAGE, Hyderabad organised a three-day online training on ‘Climate Smart Technologies for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in Agriculture’.

     

     

     

    Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, University Vice-Chancellor was the Chief Guest during the inaugural session. Professor SK Bhardwaj, Head, the Department of Environmental Science coordinated the training while Dr. Pratima Vaidya was the co-coordinator. In this training, 50 extension officers, subject matter specialists from the State Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, scientists from various Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Professors and Research Scholars from various universities of the country participated and learned about the recent changes in climate, its impact on crops, insect pest dynamics and pollinator behaviour. In addition, participants were also apprised about the concept of eco-literacy, carbon farming, weather-based agro-advisories, mitigation and adaptation of climate change by using climate-smart technologies.

     

     

     

    Prof Chandel stressed on the need to study and adopt climate-smart technologies in agriculture. He asked the scientists and the agriculture professionals to work with the farmers and understand their needs and also pick out the technologies which are in sync with the environment. He said that such trainings are necessary for the capacity building of extension officials in order to provide benefit to the farmers. Dr. Bhardwaj said that this training would enhance the knowledge of participants and help in identifying good practices for combating climate change impacts in the region. Prof. Bhardwaj also expressed interest in organising such training in offline mode in association with MANAGE, Hyderabad so that hands-on practices may be shared with the field officials.

    A one-day Yoga awareness camp and meditation programme was held at the Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (UHF), Nauni on Thursday. The programme was organized under the Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) mission of the Government of India. Shri Sriniwas Murthi, Founder of Yog Bharti Himachal Pradesh was the master trainer on the occasion.

     

     

     

    Director of Extension Education Dr. Inder Dev welcomed all the trainers and explained about the Mission LiFE and the activities being carried out in the university from 22 May till June 5. He urged the staff and students to make yoga a part of their day-to-day life and take steps to live in harmony with nature.

     

     

     

    Sriniwas Murthi and trainers from Yog Bharti conducted a Yoga Session for the students, faculty and staff in the university gymnasium. Sriniwas Murthi was of the view that Yoga is a science and a way of life, which can be incorporated into every aspect of life. He urged all the participants to incorporate yoga in order to lead a healthy and stress-free life. For over two hours the participants were apprised of the various yoga asanas and their correct techniques. The benefits of these asanas were also shared with the participants who took active participation in the activity.

     

     

     

    Later in the day, Sister Sushma and Babita from the Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwavidyalaya Solan conducted a meditation session for the university staff and students. Several mediation techniques were shown to the participants. Dr. KK Raina, PI of NAHEP IDP thanked the yoga trainers and members of the Brahma Kumaris for their support in creating two engagement programmes that helped the participants connect with themselves and nature.

     

     

     

    A 15-member student contingent from Government Senior Secondary School Shamrod presented a small skit to give a message of tobacco-free life and the ills associated with its consumption.

     

     

     

    No vehicle day observed

     

    With an aim to give a message of environmental protection, the university observed a no-vehicle day on campus on Thursday as part of the LiFE mission, All the employees and students parked their vehicles at designated spots. The students and staff gave their full cooperation in the initiative and only the movement of e vehicles and emergency vehicles was permitted during working hours. This was done to give a message of environmental conservation.

    The Directorate of Extension Education and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Solan of Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan jointly organized a full-day programme on World Soil Day on December 5, 2022.

     

    To give the students a practical experience about soil sampling, Geographical Position System-based soil samples from two depths- 0 to 15 cm and 15 to 30 cm were collected from different departmental research farms, forest lands, agroforestry-based systems and grasslands of the university area. The sampling was carried out by the university’s postgraduate students of the different departments and Experience Learning Programme (ELP) undergraduate students in collaboration with the faculty and students of the Department of Soil Science. The samples were handed over to the Incharge Soil, Water and Plant Analysis Laboratory for determination of physical, chemical and biological characteristics.

     

    In the afternoon session, a lecture cum interaction on Soil Health Management was organized for the Faculty of Soil Science and ELP students of the College of Horticulture, College of Forestry and College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag, Mandi. Professor Bijay Singh, former National Professor of Soil Science of ICAR was the chief guest and the lead speaker on the occasion.

     

    Dr. Inder Dev, Director Extension Education, welcomed the Chief Guest and introduced the importance of World Soil Day and its celebration at the university. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Singh talked about the importance of soil health management and the use of fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures. He also spoke on nitrogen fertilization management in rice-wheat cropping and other crops and various aspects of fertilizer applications while maintaining soil health and productivity. Professor Singh also addressed the queries of the students and the faculty. An interaction session on the use of fertilizers and their effect on soil health was organized after the lecture. The function was also attended by the statutory officers, Head of the Departments and faculty members of the university.

    A three-day orientation training programme of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) scientists for the development of scientific models on natural farming in different climatic zones commenced today at the Directorate of Extension Education, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni.

     

     

     

    The programme ‘Understanding Natural Farming for its Flawless Strategies to Out Scale through KVKs (Zone-I)’ is being organised in collaboration with the ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Ludhiana.

     

     

     

    Speaking at the event Dr. Inder Dev, Director of Extension Education said that the Himachal Model has shown the country that natural farming can be an alternative production technique that can help to minimize input costs, conserve environment and increase farm incomes. He said that natural farming could spread to fields and to every farmer through the intervention of the KVKs. Dr. Rajesh Rana, Nodal officer of Natural Farming for Zone 1 said that the Krishi Vigyan Kendras are an excellent medium to disseminate the latest agricultural knowledge to the farmers. He lauded the efforts of Himachal Pradesh in natural farming and said that experts from the University have been sharing their knowledge with scientists and farmers from across the country and contributing to raising awareness of this farming system. Dr. Rana said that the target will be to develop 4-5 model action plans from Zone 1 in the near future.

     

     

     

    In the first session, Dr. Subhash Verma, Coordinator of the SPNF programme at UHF Nauni gave the history and heritage of natural farming while Dr. Kuldeep Thakur talked about the importance of crop geometry under this system. Dr. Upender Singh raised awareness on the different inputs of natural agriculture and their usage while Dr. Usha Sharma gave a presentation on the integration of fruit crops in this system.

     

     

     

    Programme coordinator Dr. Anil Sood informed that 82 scientists representing Zone-1 comprising KVKs of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab. During the three days, scientists from different KVKs will be exposed to the basics of natural farming through various technical sessions and exposure visits to farmers’ fields will be used to showcase the results of this technique to the participants.
