Opened to public in the year 1903,the 96-km-long Shimla-Kalka Railway track will be soon revamped. This railway track has 103 tunnels (now 102 tunnels as tunnel no 46 had collapsed, four decades ago), 800 bridges, and 919 curves along with negotiable gradient.
According to the sources, Rs 31.40 crore will be spent on modernizing the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway line. For this , the railway board has already appointed a special advisor and asked him to inspect the railway station and submit a report. The work will be completed in the end of December. The objective of getting the work done is to implement the master plan in phases to enhance the minimum essential amenities (MEA) including other amenities.
Sources from railway ministry said that the work will be done in the phases ,in the first phase, escalators, online displays and other modern facilities will be available in Kalka and Shimla railway stations. With the modernization, the clean and hygienic waiting areas and restrooms will be made for the railway station passengers. There will also be good food stalls. Else there will be separate points for arrival and departure of passengers and vehicles. Adequate parking facility will be provided at the station. Arrangements for rain water harvesting and greenery will also be made.
