Former Union Minister and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel, Anurag Singh Thakur, chaired a comprehensive review meeting on the implementation and impact of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) in the Indian steel sector.

The meeting reviewed the existing quality-control framework, with particular emphasis on ensuring that domestically manufactured steel meets international standards, preventing the circulation of substandard products and strengthening the safety and durability of the country’s infrastructure.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Steel, Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) participated in the deliberations. The committee discussed effective enforcement of QCOs, simplification of certification procedures and removal of regulatory bottlenecks to strengthen compliance across both primary and secondary steel producers.

The committee emphasized that strengthening quality standards is essential to advancing Aatmanirbhar Bharat while enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian steel manufacturers. Improved domestic quality standards will help discourage inferior imports, create a level playing field for Indian producers and expand opportunities for Indian steel in international markets.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of sustained investment in quality-control infrastructure and effective coordination among regulatory institutions. The committee underscored that expanding production capacity must go hand in hand with stringent quality assurance to meet India’s growing infrastructure requirements through reliable, domestically manufactured steel.

The committee will consider appropriate policy recommendations to institutionalize robust quality standards, protect consumer interests and strengthen India’s industrial ecosystem. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the vision of Make in India and the country’s journey towards greater industrial self-reliance.
