Himachal Pradesh, where people expect to live a healthy life due to pure air and calm environment, is witnessing a steady increase in the number of heart patients. Earlier this disease was limited only to the elderly, but now young people between 20 and 40 years are also getting affected by heart attack and other cardiovascular diseases.
According to the Global Burden of Disease (IHME) report, heart disease is the cause of 14.29% deaths in Himachal, which is higher than the national average of 13.20%. The report also states that Himachal ranks fifth in the country in cases of heart disease, while it ranks second in cases of high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Lifestyle changes: Urbanization has changed the traditional lifestyle of Himachal. Now most of the youth consume junk food, fried food, and sugary beverages, which is increasing the problem of obesity, high cholesterol and heart diseases.
