Governor visits historic Masroor Rock-Cut Temple in Kangra

Calls for preserving India’s rich heritage for future generations

Governor Kavinder Gupta visited the historic Masroor Rock-Cut Temple in Kangra yesterday and took keen interest in its architectural, historical and cultural significance.

During the visit, the Governor was briefed about the history of the temple complex, its architectural features, construction style and ongoing conservation efforts. Carved out of a single massive rock, the Masroor temple complex is regarded as a remarkable example of ancient Indian Nagara architectural tradition.

The Governor was also apprised of the damage suffered by the temple complex over the years due to natural erosion and particularly, the devastating Kangra earthquake of 1905. Several shikharas, pillars and sculptural elements of the historic complex were damaged in the earthquake.

Kavinder Gupta said that the preservation of India’s rich historical and cultural heritage is essential for safeguarding the country’s civilizational identity and transmitting its legacy to future generations.

He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government has been giving renewed emphasis to the preservation, promotion and wider recognition of India’s rich historical, cultural and spiritual heritage.

The Governor emphasised that heritage conservation is a shared responsibility and called for collective efforts to protect the country’s invaluable cultural assets while ensuring that their historical and architectural legacy is preserved for generations to come.

He said that India’s heritage represents the continuity of its civilizational journey and that initiatives for its conservation must go hand in hand with the broader vision of development and cultural resurgence.
