Hamirpur: A pall of grief descended on Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district on Sunday as the mortal remains of Aman Kumar reached his native village, Kali Chick in Barsar subdivision, 16 days after his death in South Africa.
Aman had died on April 11, 2026, after drowning in a swimming pool in South Africa. Since then, his family had been waiting to bring his body back to India for the last rites in his native village.
His father, Udham Singh, completed all formalities and made persistent efforts to repatriate his son’s body. The family’s wait ended on Sunday morning when the body reached home around 7 am, triggering scenes of grief and anguish.
Family members broke down on seeing Aman for the last time, while relatives and villagers gathered in large numbers to pay their respects. The atmosphere turned sombre as people from nearby areas also arrived to offer condolences.
The last rites were performed around 9 am as per Hindu traditions. Hundreds joined the funeral procession, and a large crowd accompanied the family to the cremation ground. Villagers, including elders, youth and women, expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
Aman was the only son of his parents and considered the family’s biggest support. He had recently married a woman from Kerala in a court ceremony, and a traditional wedding function was scheduled for May 10. The family had been preparing for celebrations, but the tragic incident turned their joy into mourning.
The untimely death has left the entire village in shock, with residents describing it as an irreparable loss for the family.
