Shimla: Escalating military tensions between Iran and other West Asian (Gulf) nations have triggered concern among thousands of families in Himachal Pradesh whose relatives are working abroad.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the state government is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant touch with the Centre and the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of Himachali residents in the Gulf region.
Estimated Presence of Himachalis in Gulf Countries
According to estimates shared by various expatriate organisations, around 35,000 people from Himachal Pradesh are employed across Gulf nations:
-
United Arab Emirates: 10,000–12,000 (highest number)
-
Saudi Arabia: 6,000–8,000
-
Kuwait: 3,000–4,000
-
Qatar: 2,000–3,000
-
Oman and Bahrain: Around 3,000 combined
Anxiety After Iranian Attacks
Recent missile and drone strikes allegedly carried out by Iran in parts of the Gulf region have heightened anxiety among families back home. While initial reports suggest that the situation remains under control in most countries and Indian nationals are safe, uncertainty has grown amid fears of further escalation.
The Chief Minister said the state government is keeping a close watch on developments in the region and is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the well-being of Himachali residents.
Assurance to Families
Sukhu assured families that the government is in regular communication with the Centre and that all necessary steps will be taken to safeguard residents abroad. “We are monitoring the situation through the Ministry of External Affairs. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our people and facilitate their return if required,” he said.
Meanwhile, Himachalis living in Gulf countries are staying connected through Facebook and WhatsApp groups to share updates and remain in touch with one another during the tense situation.
