Himachal Pradesh witnessed a fresh spell of rain as the southwest monsoon began withdrawing from the state, bringing a noticeable chill to several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, in its bulletin issued at 1 pm on Monday, forecast light to moderate rain at several places, with the possibility of heavy rain at isolated locations. Kangra, Mandi, Kinnaur and Sirmaur have been placed under particular watch, with moderate to heavy rainfall likely at some places. Higher reaches of the state may also receive snowfall.
Shimla remained cloudy through the morning before receiving rain, resulting in a further drop in temperatures and cooler conditions across the state.
According to the weather department, several parts of Himachal may receive light to moderate rain or snowfall on September 28, while isolated areas could experience moderate to heavy precipitation. On September 29, light to moderate rain is likely at some places, after which weather conditions are expected to improve.
Heavy rain alert for Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur
The district-wise forecast indicates the possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Kangra, while Mandi and Sirmaur may experience moderate to heavy rain at isolated locations. In Kinnaur, some areas may receive moderate rain or snowfall. The weather department has advised people in areas likely to receive heavy rain to remain cautious. Rain may trigger landslides, soil subsidence, rising water levels in rivers and streams and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Wet and slippery roads, along with reduced visibility, could also create difficulties for commuters.
Strong winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti on September 28, according to the forecast.
The seven-day forecast indicates a gradual improvement in weather conditions from September 29. While isolated areas may receive light rain on September 29, most parts of the state are expected to remain mainly dry from September 30 to October 4.
The latest spell of rain has brought a noticeable change in weather across Himachal Pradesh, with cooler conditions signalling the onset of the autumn chill in the higher and mid-hill regions.
