Former Union Cabinet Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Singh Thakur congratulated Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, on his election as the new President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). He said the Indian delegation looked forward to working with the newly elected President to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, democracy and global cooperation.
On the concluding day of the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania, the Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, actively participated in the proceedings. During the concluding session, the delegation exercised its voting rights in the election of the new IPU President, reflecting India’s active engagement in international legislative processes and global diplomatic initiatives.
Anurag Singh Thakur described it as an honour to represent India alongside his parliamentary colleagues, including Aparajita Sarangi, Sasmit Patra, Sanjay Jaiswal, K.J. Shekhar, Lata, Bijuli K. Medhi and N.K. Premachandran.
During the Assembly, the Indian delegation effectively articulated India’s position on key issues, including good governance, inclusivity, resilience against the impacts of climate change, democracy and global cooperation. India’s participation in Arusha reaffirmed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy as a vital instrument for sustained dialogue and cooperation with the international community.
The Assembly provided parliamentary representatives from different countries an opportunity to deliberate on shared global challenges and reiterate their commitment to democratic values, environmental priorities and international cooperation.
