Junga school students learn disaster prevention techniques

Shimla, October 15
On the occasion of International Disaster Risk Reduction Day, an awareness program was organized at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Junga on Thursday. In this program, organized under the chairmanship of Principal Mahesh Sharma, Platoon Havildar Amit Kumar Mehta and Dinesh Kumar of Rural Company Junga of Home Guard 3rd Battalion Shimla, informed the students about various aspects of disaster management, school safety and fire safety. During this, a practical demonstration of rescue methods in emergency situations was also done through a mock drill.
During the program, experts explained to students various methods of transporting an injured person to safety during an earthquake or accident. Demonstrations included three-hand seats, four-hand seats, lifting the injured using a hand lock, and carrying a patient safely on a stretcher. Students were told that instead of panicking during a disaster, they should act with patience and prudence.
Under fire safety, information was provided about the proper use of fire extinguishers and the procedure for evacuating a building in an emergency. Safety measures to be adopted during natural disasters, including earthquakes and landslides, were also explained in detail. Students were taught the “drop-cover-hold” technique during an earthquake, so they can protect themselves in such situations.
On this occasion, Biology lecturer Vanita Kumari raised awareness among students about the POCSO Act and the concepts of safe and unsafe touch. She also taught children about their physical safety, personal boundaries, and the importance of seeking support from a trusted person in an uncomfortable situation.
At the end of the program, Principal Mahesh Sharma expressed his gratitude to the resource persons. He said that such awareness programs not only boost students’ self-confidence but also develop their ability to make informed decisions and help others in disaster and emergency situations.
