Kangra, 9February
A wave of public concern is rising in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district as the historic Kangra Valley Railway has remained largely shut for nearly four years. Locals say that despite repeated representations, protests, and correspondence with authorities, the issue continues to be met only with assurances and no concrete action.
The railway line, which connects Pathankot to Joginder Nagar under the Northern Railway (Jammu Division), has yet to resume full operations. Residents claim that recurring monsoon damage and prolonged maintenance delays have left commuters, traders, and tourism stakeholders struggling.
Community members from areas such as Nagrota Suriyan and Nurpur have been actively raising the matter for years. Demonstrations were even held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, but locals say the results have been disappointing.
Describing the rail line as “the heartbeat of Kangra,” citizens have appealed to political leaders across party lines to intervene. They have specifically urged that the matter be taken up with Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu to ensure early restoration.
Built during the British era, the Kangra Valley line is considered both a heritage asset and a vital public transport link. Residents argue that while the railway survived decades after Independence, the current prolonged suspension reflects serious administrative neglect. They also expressed concern that elected representatives from the state, including Members of Parliament, have not been able to secure a lasting solution.
With public frustration deepening, citizens are now demanding a clear timeline for revival and permanent strengthening of infrastructure to prevent seasonal shutdowns in the future.
