Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 following a brief illness, leaving the film and music industry in deep mourning.
According to family sources, the veteran singer breathed her last in Mumbai after her health deteriorated due to age-related complications. Her demise marks the end of an era in Indian music, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
One of the most versatile voices in Bollywood, Bhosle’s career spanned nearly eight decades, during which she recorded over 12,000 songs in multiple languages and genres — from classical and ghazals to cabaret and pop — creating a legacy few can match.
Condolences flooded social media, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling her voice “timeless” and a cornerstone of India’s cultural identity. Several Bollywood celebrities described her death as an “irreparable loss” and the “end of a golden musical era.”
The younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle carved a distinct identity of her own, becoming a global icon known for her adaptability and expressive singing style.
Her last rites are expected to be held in Mumbai, where members of the film fraternity and thousands of fans are likely to gather to pay their final respects.
With her passing, Indian music loses not just a singer, but a voice that defined emotions, generations, and the very soul of Bollywood.
