Shimla
The Police Department has taken a strict stand against vehicle owners who display names, designations, caste identities, slogans, organisation names or fancy words on their number plates to showcase personal identity or influence.
Officials have clarified that no tampering with vehicle number plates will be tolerated. Vehicle owners must use only authorised and standard-compliant number plates. Fancy or modified number plates are unacceptable, and strict action will be taken against violators.
A vehicle’s number plate is its official identification. However, many people misuse it as a medium for personal promotion, which is a clear violation of the law. Under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, only the registration number issued by the Transport Department can be displayed on the number plate. The size, colour, font and spacing must strictly adhere to prescribed standards.
Action for Violations
Traffic police can issue on-the-spot challans for violations. In serious cases or repeated offences, authorities may even impound the vehicle. Officials have urged citizens to comply with the rules, stating that adherence to traffic laws is the responsibility of every vehicle owner.
Attempt to Stand Out
In the era of social media, many people attempt to make their vehicles look distinctive. Some treat it as a status symbol, while others follow it as a trend. However, authorities emphasised that on the road, legal identity matters—not personal branding.
