The ongoing delay in salary payments under the National Health Mission (NHM) in Himachal Pradesh has deepened the financial crisis for thousands of employees. Around 2,600 contractual and nearly 3,000 outsourced NHM workers are struggling as they have not received their salaries for the previous month. The December 2025 salary, which was due in January 2026, is yet to be released.
NHM employees stated that they form the backbone of the state’s healthcare system and work tirelessly round the clock. Their responsibilities include immunization programmes, maternal and child health services, emergency health response, and delivering healthcare facilities in rural and remote areas.
Rising Burden of Fees, EMIs and Penalties
Due to the non-payment of salaries, employees are finding it difficult to pay their children’s school and college fees, bank EMIs, and essential utility bills such as electricity and water. Many workers are also facing penalties imposed by banks and departments because of delayed payments, further worsening their financial condition.
Employees’ Association Raises Concern
Expressing serious concern over the situation, a representative of the Himachal Pradesh NHM Contractual Employees Association said that despite working with full dedication and commitment, the lack of timely salaries is placing a heavy burden on their families.
“We respectfully urge the state government to intervene immediately. Timely payment of salaries is crucial to meet daily household needs, children’s education expenses, and loan repayments. Smooth functioning of health services depends on ensuring that employees are paid on time,” the representative added.
