Renowned as the residence of the British Viceroy of India, Institute of Advance study is designed by British architect Henry Irwin and built in the Jacobethan style during Lord Dufferin’s tenure as Viceroy. Institute of Advance Study is located in the observatory hills of Shimla.
Institute of Advance Study is first building to have electric lighting. The structure was started in 1880 and was completed in 1888. The place is also the venue for Shimla conference 1945. The decision of partition of India was also taken in 1947. After 1947, building was the property of president of India and was renamed as Rashtrapati Niwas.
The addition of the tower by Lord Curzon and the planting of the gardens by the Marquis Lansdowne. The institute was formally inaugurated by S. Radhakrishnan – the former President of India on 20th October 1965.
The Indian Institute of Advanced Study was first created as a society on 6 October 1964.The eminent historian, Professor Niharranjan Ray, was appointed as the first Director of the Institute.
A bell made of eight metals which was presented by the king of Nepal was available to be admired by tourists till April 2010.
