Renuka Ji Wetland, under the jurisdiction of the Shimla Wildlife Division in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, has once again emerged as an important wintering ground for migratory waterbirds during December 2025. Systematic bird observations conducted during the month recorded a total of 423 migratory birds belonging to several globally distributed species, reaffirming the ecological significance of the wetland.

Among the prominent species observed were the Eurasian Moorhen (207 individuals) and Eurasian Coot (137 individuals), indicating the availability of suitable habitat and ample food resources. Other migratory birds recorded during the survey included Mallard (43), Great Cormorant (13), Little Cormorant (9), Green-winged Teal (5), Northern Shoveler (3), Water Rail (2), and Green Sandpiper (2). Sightings of Northern Pintail and Great Egret were also reported.
The healthy presence and diversity of migratory birds highlight the effectiveness of ongoing conservation measures and the relatively undisturbed nature of the wetland ecosystem. Renuka Ji Wetland continues to play a crucial role in supporting avifaunal biodiversity, particularly during the winter migration period.
Wildlife authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting the wetland habitat and have appealed to visitors and local stakeholders to support conservation efforts by minimizing disturbance, avoiding littering, and adhering to eco-friendly practices.
The continued arrival of migratory birds at Renuka Ji Wetland not only underscores its ecological value but also strengthens its potential as a centre for nature education and responsible eco-tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
