Students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at APG Shimla University had an enlightening visit to All India Radio (AIR) Shimla on Tuesday. Accompanied by faculty members Dr. Pyar Singh and Dr. Vijayshree, the students were welcomed by Mr. Ritesh Kapoor, Regional News Head of AIR, who conducted a hands-on workshop to deepen their understanding of radio journalism.
The session covered critical aspects of the field, including news writing, editing, live studio operations, and the use of advanced broadcasting technologies. Over four immersive hours, students gained valuable insights into the operations of a radio station, from console management to technical broadcasting methods. Mr. Kapoor engaged the students by addressing their queries and demonstrating the software utilized for radio broadcasts.
Speaking to the students, Mr. Kapoor highlighted the responsibility inherent in journalism, describing it as the fourth pillar of democracy. He emphasized that success in radio journalism requires extensive knowledge, years of dedication, and unwavering effort.
The students also toured the control room, announcement room, and studio under the guidance of senior newsreader and announcer Ms. Rajkumari Chandel and AIR engineers. They learned about frequency systems, transmitters, and the conversion of electrical waves into sound waves. Practical sessions included news reading, recording, and editing, offering students firsthand experience in a professional setting.
The visit concluded with expressions of gratitude from the Head of Journalism and Mass Communication, Prof. Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Dean of Student Welfare Dr. Neelam Sharma, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. R.S. Chauhan. They commended AIR Shimla for their efforts in mentoring the students and expressed a desire for continued collaboration to provide practical learning experiences for future batches.
This impactful visit and workshop provided students with a deeper understanding of radio journalism, offering them practical tools and knowledge to excel in their future careers.
