Himachal Pradesh’s 56-year-old sports department professional Balbir Singh has secured an impressive third position in the 21-km half marathon at the Surya Spiti Kunzum La Challenge, one of the state’s toughest high-altitude running events.
Organised by the Indian Army, the event was held amid the breathtaking yet challenging terrain of the Spiti Valley. The high altitude, thin air, extreme cold, steep climbs and rugged terrain tested the physical endurance and mental strength of participants.
Maintaining pace and focus under such demanding conditions required discipline, careful planning and sustained effort throughout the race. Singh’s achievement comes against the backdrop of his professional responsibilities in the Himachal Pradesh Sports Department and his continued commitment to athletics and regular training.
Finishing on the podium in the 21-km category is a significant achievement for the 56-year-old athlete and reflects his dedication, perseverance and passion for running.
Singh is now preparing for the World Athletics Championships in Korea, adding another chapter to an athletic career that includes three medals at the Asian Games and two medals at the All India Civil Services Marathon.
His third-place finish at the Surya Spiti Kunzum La Challenge has emerged as a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh’s sporting community and highlights the importance of fitness, discipline and determination in pursuing challenging goals.
