Kangra. Due to rain and rising water levels, preparations are underway to open the gates of the Pong Dam once again. The administration has issued an alert in the Fatehpur and Indora subdivisions. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid going near rivers and streams to avoid any untoward incident.
The BBMB has also issued a notification regarding this. The alarm bells are ringing the most in the Fatehpur and Indora assembly constituencies located on the banks of the Beas. The last time water was released from the dam, many villages were devastated. Fields, barns, and crops were swept away by the strong current of the Beas. Now, an order has been issued to release 50,000 cusecs of water again. Therefore, people have been urged to stay away from rivers and streams and remain vigilant.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board has announced that approximately 50,000 cusecs of water will be released from the turbines of the Pong Dam Power House and approximately 32,000 cusecs from the spillway gates, beginning at 12 noon on October 4th. The total discharge will be up to 50,000 cusecs. The administration has alerted the civil, irrigation, and flood control departments. Local residents have been advised to stay away from low-lying areas and river banks.
SDM Fatehpur Vishrut Bharti said that people should once again remain vigilant, avoid going near the Beas River, and follow the administration’s instructions. Any negligence could prove fatal. Meanwhile, residents of Fatehpur and Indora are once again fearful and apprehensive about the Beas River’s strong waves. The administration has issued an alert, but the biggest challenge is how much safety preparation can be implemented this time, given the previous losses.
