Shimla, August 25: In a major food safety action ahead of the festive season, nearly two quintals of sweets were destroyed at Krishna Sweets in Boileauganj after cockroaches were found in the syrup used for Gulab Jamuns.
The action was taken during an inspection by Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety and Regulation, Dr Vijaya, along with Food Safety Officer Dr Sunil Sharma, at various food establishments in the Boileauganj market.
Officials also collected seven samples, including coloured Rasgullas, Barfi, Milk Cake and ghee, for laboratory testing. Dr Vijaya directed food business operators to strictly follow FSSAI norms and warned against the use of unauthorised food colours.
The Food Safety Department said inspections and sampling drives would continue throughout the festive season, and strict action would be taken against violators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
