Congress Exposes Its Double Standards by Opposing SIR, Questions Democratic Processes Out of Electoral Frustration: Randhir Sharma

‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ Padyatra to Be Held in Hamirpur on November 4; MLAs, Former MLAs and Hundreds of Party Workers from All 17 Assembly Constituencies of Hamirpur Parliamentary Constituency to Participate

Hamirpur, October 31, 2026:

Senior BJP leader and MLA from Naina Devi Assembly Constituency, Randhir Sharma, attended a meeting of the BJP Hamirpur District unit held at Mattan Sidh on Saturday under the chairmanship of District BJP President Rakesh Thakur. The meeting focused on preparations and strategic planning for the ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ (Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao) Padyatra scheduled to be held in Hamirpur on November 4, 2026. The march will be led by BJP Himachal Pradesh President Dr. Rajeev Bindal and former Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Singh Thakur.

During the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his birth anniversary. Randhir Sharma, along with other BJP office-bearers and party workers, offered flowers before his portrait and remembered his extraordinary contribution towards strengthening the unity and integrity of the nation. They observed that Sardar Patel’s historic role in uniting the country and his exemplary leadership would continue to inspire generations.

Randhir Sharma informed that MLAs, former MLAs, senior BJP leaders and hundreds of party workers representing all 17 Assembly constituencies of the Hamirpur Parliamentary Constituency would participate in the padyatra. He urged party workers to work with full commitment, coordination and enthusiasm to ensure the successful organisation of the programme.

Addressing mediapersons thereafter, Randhir Sharma criticised the Congress and other opposition parties for opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He said that frustrated by repeated electoral defeats, the Congress was now questioning democratic processes, despite having itself raised concerns about irregularities in electoral rolls in the past.

He pointed out that Congress leaders had earlier alleged discrepancies in voter lists, including the presence of names of deceased persons and individuals who did not reside in the respective constituencies. However, now that the Election Commission was undertaking SIR to make electoral rolls more accurate, transparent and reliable, the same Congress was opposing the exercise. According to him, this reflects the party’s political opportunism and contradictory approach.

Randhir Sharma alleged that by opposing SIR, the Congress was indirectly supporting infiltrators and fraudulent voters. He asserted that electoral rolls must contain only the names of eligible voters. Removing the names of deceased persons, duplicate and fraudulent voters, and those who are not eligible to be registered in the concerned constituency is essential for ensuring free and fair elections. He said that opposing such an exercise goes against the spirit of the Constitution and the principles of transparency in a democratic system.

He also questioned the Congress’s stand on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), alleging that its opposition to EVMs changes according to political convenience. He said that the party does not question the machines when it wins elections, but raises doubts about the electoral process whenever the BJP emerges victorious. He added that whether elections are conducted through EVMs or ballot papers, the ultimate mandate belongs to the people. BJP leaders, he said, remain connected with the public and prioritise public welfare and development.

Randhir Sharma further stated that the Congress should refrain from unnecessarily questioning the impartiality of a constitutional institution like the Election Commission of India. He said that the Commission is an independent body responsible for conducting elections in accordance with constitutional provisions and established rules. Referring to the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, he recalled that following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the electoral process was affected across the country and elections were postponed at several places. He maintained that the role and decisions of constitutional institutions should not be questioned merely on the basis of political convenience or electoral outcomes.

BJP to Launch Statewide Public Awareness Campaign Under ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ Initiative

Randhir Sharma said that the BJP had launched the ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ campaign to strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions and counter what he described as misleading narratives being propagated by the opposition. Under the campaign, seminars and public interaction programmes will be organised at state, district and Assembly levels to educate people about the need, significance and objectives of SIR. Special outreach initiatives will also be undertaken to engage with youth and college students and familiarise them with democratic processes.

He informed that, during the first phase of the campaign, padyatras are being organised at 121 locations across the country by November 5, with the proposed participation of more than 10,000 people. Four programmes have also been scheduled in Himachal Pradesh. The padyatra in Dharamshala was held on October 30, while programmes in Shimla and Hamirpur are scheduled for November 1 and November 4, respectively. He said that the party organisation was making comprehensive preparations to ensure that the Hamirpur padyatra witnesses extensive participation from across the parliamentary constituency.
