Congress wants to capture power through chaos rather than elections, alleges Leader of Opposition; targets Rahul Gandhi over remarks against PM Modi
Shimla, November 1, 2026: Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, accusing them of spreading political unrest and making baseless allegations of vote theft.
Addressing a public gathering at Chaura Maidan following the ‘Save Constitution, Remove Anarchy’ march, Thakur alleged that repeated electoral defeats had left the Congress leadership frustrated and politically unsettled. He accused Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders of crossing constitutional and political boundaries by using objectionable language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Thakur said the Congress leadership was unable to accept the growing public support for the Prime Minister and alleged that its attacks on Modi reflected political desperation. He added that people would respond to such remarks through democratic means, including their votes.
Sukhu Accused of Misusing Government Resources
Targeting Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for participating in protests against the Election Commission, Thakur questioned the rationale behind his allegations of electoral malpractice.
He alleged that Sukhu had come to power by making electoral guarantees and was now questioning the same democratic system. Thakur said that if the Chief Minister wanted to lead a protest against the Election Commission, he should first have resigned from his constitutional position.
He further accused the state government of misusing public resources to create political unrest instead of utilising them for the development and welfare of Himachal Pradesh. Thakur alleged that Sukhu was engaging in such activities to please Rahul Gandhi rather than prioritising the interests of the state.
Congress Has Been Losing Electoral Ground Since 1967: Thakur
Questioning the Congress party’s allegations of vote theft, the Leader of Opposition claimed that the party had been steadily losing its political presence across several states for decades.
Citing examples, he said Congress had lost its political dominance in West Bengal since 1977, Uttar Pradesh since 1989, Bihar since 1990, Gujarat since 1995 and Odisha since 1999.
He questioned how the Congress could blame electoral manipulation when, according to him, the party had already lost considerable public support in these states.
‘Modi Will Keep Returning to Power’
Thakur also accused Rahul Gandhi and his political associates of allegedly seeking to destabilise the country with foreign support. He said India had a strong democratic foundation and would never allow attempts to create instability similar to situations in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Expressing confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Thakur asserted that attempts to bring about a change of regime through political unrest would not succeed.
He said the Congress leadership would continue to face rejection from the people and asserted that Narendra Modi would return to power repeatedly.
