Waknaghat, September 26
The Department of Civil Engineering at Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT), Waknaghat, has launched a three-day training programme on the design and detailing of steel frames and trusses using STAAD.Pro as per IS 800:2007.
The programme is being attended by 22 Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers nominated from the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (HPPWD) and Himachal Pradesh Disaster Recovery and Reconstruction Project (HPDRRP).
In his inaugural address, training coordinator Dr Tanmay Gupta stressed the importance of safe, economical and code-compliant structural design, particularly in the seismic and challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh.
He said steel structures require a different design approach from conventional RCC construction, with engineers needing to pay close attention to slenderness, buckling, stability, connections, fabrication, erection and serviceability. He also emphasised that software-generated results must be backed by sound engineering judgement.
Prof Ashish Kumar, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at JUIT, welcomed the participants and highlighted the university’s continued technical engagement with HPPWD.
The programme also features expert sessions by Anukool Kumar, Assistant Manager at Intercontinental Consultants and Technocrats Pvt Ltd (ICT), who is providing industry-oriented guidance on structural design and STAAD.Pro applications.
The training covers steel frame and truss modelling, loading and analysis, limit-state design under IS 800:2007, member optimisation, long-span trusses, RHS, SHS and CHS sections, and structural stability.
Participants are also being trained in bolted and welded connections, beam-column joints, truss connections, base plates, gusset plates and anchor bolts.
The hands-on programme aims to strengthen the ability of field and design engineers to identify modelling issues, understand structural behaviour, optimise steel structures and make safer and more economical decisions while planning public infrastructure projects.
