Major breast cancer campaign organised during Pink October at Shoolini University

Solan, October 29

Shoolinians For You (SFY) of Shoolini University, in collaboration with YouWeCan, reached around 2,000 people through its Pink October campaign to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection. Held from September 20 to October 19, the campaign screened nearly 2000 women and organised awareness sessions and student activities across Shoolini University, RKMV Shimla, Sanhol Panchayat and Solan.

The initiative included volunteer training, breast self-examination demonstrations, awareness talks and screening camps using NIRAMAI technology. At Solan, the team screened around 30 women. Awareness sessions at RKMV reached approximately 700 students, faculty and staff, while campus-wide outreach engaged students across university departments.

To encourage student participation, SFY organised Pink Day, Pink Stalls, a Pink Walk, creative competitions, Pink Sports Day, Pink E-Sports and Pink Quest. Thirty per cent of the profits from the Pink Stalls were earmarked to support screening equipment used in SFY and YouWeCan camps.

Mrs Poonam Nanda, Director, Sustainability and Community Engagement, Shoolini University, who led the campaign, said, “Breast cancer can be treated successfully when detected early, yet many women hesitate to discuss it or seek screening. Through Pink October, we took awareness beyond the classroom to villages, colleges and workplaces. Our SFY volunteers demonstrated great sensitivity and commitment, and we are grateful to YouWeCan for its support. Every woman screened and every family that begins discussing breast health brings us closer to a healthier, more aware society.”

She added that SFY would continue its awareness and screening initiatives and encouraged women to prioritise breast health and seek timely medical check-ups.
