Leader of Opposition extends Independence Day greetings, calls for active participation in building a developed India
Shimla: On the occasion of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur said India had to pay a heavy price in the form of Partition for its independence. He said the creation of Pakistan on religious grounds was the result of the political failure of the Congress leadership of that time.
Thakur said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken a significant decision to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. “We must never forget our history and the pain associated with it. Remembering history is not about reopening old wounds, but about learning from the mistakes of the past so that they are not repeated,” he said.
He said Partition forced more than 15 million people to leave their homes, while lakhs lost their lives. Describing it as one of the greatest tragedies in human history, Thakur said it was difficult even today to imagine the suffering of those who were forced to leave their birthplace overnight.
“Partition was not merely a line drawn on a map; it was a wound inflicted on the heart of humanity, whose scars remain even today,” he said. According to Thakur, Partition not only altered the geographical boundaries of the country but also deeply affected the shared culture and social fabric of the region.
The Leader of Opposition said Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was an occasion to pay tribute to those who suffered during the tragedy. He said the day should inspire people to overcome social divisions and the poison of hatred while strengthening national unity, social harmony and human values.
“We celebrate our independence, but the pain of Partition still remains in the heart of India. We must learn from our history and work together to build a developed and self-reliant India,” Thakur said.

On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur extended his heartfelt greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh. He also hoisted the national flag at his residence under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
Thakur said the Independence Day celebrations remind citizens of their responsibility to strengthen the unity, integrity and pride of the nation.
