BISHOP COTTON SCHOOL, Shimla Today’s proceedings were initiated by a service in the chapel. The participants got a taste of a typical BCS service in the beautiful Holy Trinity Chapel, where the visitors learned of the history of the school and the competition itself.
After the service, all the participants and the staff, along with everyone else involved, gathered for a photograph at the steps of the Irwin Hall, the ultimate venue for the Final Debates
The first set of debates showcased a clash between Bishop Cotton School (Light Blue) and Auckland House School for Boys. The motion, “All student loans need to be forgiven,” was opposed by Auckland House School and proposed by the Cottonians. Aarav Wadaskar performed splendidly and won the Best Speaker award. The conviction of Aarav and Kabir was outstanding, leading to the motion being carried and the light blue team of Bishop Cotton claiming victory. Auckland Boys also put up a strong case despite them being on the harder side of the topic; Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai and Vivek High School put up a fabulous show on the topic “AI is approaching the capability to surpass human intelligence in Decision Making,” The proposition provided factual information that sealed the victory over the opposition. Despite close competition, Cathedral and John Connon edged past, leading to the motion being passed.
The result of the debate between Bishop Cotton (dark blue) and La Martiniere Girls was also a very close one. After some great inputs from both ends on the topic “Abstract Art Lacks Universal Meaning” the Cottonians put up a great fight, but the they lost and the motion was Lost. The final debate of the Morning session was between Shimla’s Auckland House School and the La Martinere College for Boys. After much consideration. The motion on the topic “Ban fast foods in school canteens’ was won and La Martinere Boys took the win.
The afternoon Session was as exciting as the first, if not more. Both the Bishop Cotton teams won their respective debates; the light blue team won against the St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh while the Dark blue team won over St. Thomas School Shimla. Vivek High outshone against Vasant Valley School in the debate on the topic “Social media has improved relationships not reduced them. The final debate of the day was between GEMS, Dubai and the La Martinere for boys. The topic was “All schools today must have armed security guards” this was especially hard to judge but the motion was passed and La Martinere took the win.
The day was filled with excitement and thrill and we expect much more to come as we move forward into this contest. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s update
