Former Union Cabinet Minister and five-time Member of Parliament from Hamirpur, Anurag Singh Thakur, has been reappointed as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel for the 2026–27 term. The reappointment follows the Committee’s performance during his previous tenure and its contribution to parliamentary oversight of India’s core industrial sectors.

During the 2025–26 term, the Committee, under the chairmanship of Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, was conferred the prestigious Sansad Ratna Award, recognising its parliamentary performance, detailed examination of key issues, rigorous oversight and substantive interventions concerning the country’s coal, mining and steel sectors.

Expressing his gratitude on the reappointment, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said that he was deeply humbled and grateful to have been entrusted once again with the responsibility of chairing the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel. He thanked Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for his trust and Hon’ble Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla for his continued guidance.

Reflecting on the Committee’s previous tenure, Shri Thakur said that its recognition with the Sansad Ratna Award was a matter of pride and encouragement. He noted that the Committee had worked with rigour and purpose on improving production efficiency, promoting sustainable mining practices, modernising infrastructure and advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

He expressed confidence that the Committee would continue its work with the same commitment during the new term, focusing on key policy issues, effective parliamentary scrutiny and constructive recommendations to strengthen these strategically important sectors.

Highlighting the significance of the Committee’s mandate, Shri Thakur said that as India advances towards the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047, the coal, mining and steel sectors will remain central to the country’s energy security, industrial expansion and infrastructure development. Enhancing productivity, adopting modern technologies, ensuring responsible resource utilisation and promoting environmentally sustainable practices will be important to meeting India’s growing economic and infrastructure requirements.

Alongside his responsibilities as Committee Chairman, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur continues to serve on several important parliamentary committees. These include the Public Accounts Committee (PAC); the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’; the JPC on the 130th Constitutional Amendment; the JPC on the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill; and the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Power.

Beyond his parliamentary engagements, Shri Thakur remains associated with the development of premier healthcare and medical education institutions through his roles in the governing and institutional bodies of AIIMS Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh and AIIMS Bathinda.

His reappointment provides continuity in the Committee’s parliamentary oversight of sectors that are integral to India’s energy requirements, industrial capacity, infrastructure modernisation and long-term economic development.
