Shimla: Public outrage has intensified against the Shimla Municipal Corporation following the death of street vendor Chandan, who allegedly sustained serious injuries during a civic enforcement drive on May 31. After battling for life in the ICU for four days, Chandan succumbed to his injuries, sparking anger among street vendors’ unions and labour organisations.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, CITU Himachal Pradesh President Vijender Mehra levelled serious allegations against the Municipal Corporation administration. He claimed that Chandan was attempting to save his belongings during the corporation’s action against roadside vendors when he fell and suffered severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal.
Mehra demanded strict action against the officials and employees allegedly responsible for the incident. He called for the registration of a culpable homicide case and urged authorities to bring those responsible within the ambit of law.
The labour leader also sought ₹25 lakh compensation for the bereaved family, a government job for one family member, and complete government support for the education of Chandan’s children.
“This is not just the death of an individual. It is a matter concerning the dignity, livelihood, and safety of poor and hardworking people who struggle daily to earn a living,” Mehra said.
Warning of a larger agitation, he stated that if the demands are not addressed promptly, CITU and street vendors’ unions would launch a statewide protest campaign, including demonstrations and gheraos of the offices of the Municipal Commissioner and Joint Commissioner.
Chandan’s death has reignited debate in Shimla over the functioning of the Municipal Corporation and the rights and protection of street vendors operating in the city.
