Shimla, May 15, 2026.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan launched a scathing attack on the state’s Congress government, saying that Himachal Pradesh is currently facing its most difficult period of economic devastation, debt, corruption, and administrative failures. He made an emotional appeal to the people of the state, saying that the Municipal Corporation, District Council, Panchayat Samiti, and Panchayat elections are not just local elections, but a major opportunity to save Himachal.
Harsh Mahajan said that today the people of Himachal Pradesh have a democratic opportunity that comes once every five years. He said that by voting for BJP-supported candidates, the public should send a political message to the Congress government that the people of the state will no longer tolerate lies, deceit, and misgovernance.
He said that the Congress government has completely weakened Himachal Pradesh economically in its two and a half to four years of rule. Atrocities against the public, inflation, rising taxes, and the halt in development work have plunged the state into crisis. He said that today every segment of society—employees, unemployed, farmers, women, businessmen, and youth—is upset with the Congress government.
Harsh Mahajan said that if anyone doesn’t believe him, they should read the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. According to the report, 12 corporations and boards in the state are currently running at a loss of over ₹6,454 crore. The Electricity Board alone has accumulated losses of over ₹3,246 crore, while the Himachal Road Transport Corporation has a debt of approximately ₹10,966 crore and the Finance Corporation has a debt of over ₹180 crore.
He said that the Congress government reinstated the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) but did not even create a separate pension fund. This means that in the coming years, the entire burden of pension payments will fall directly on the state treasury, and the economic crisis will worsen in the future.
Harsh Mahajan said that the CAG report also revealed that Himachal Pradesh faced a revenue deficit of ₹5,558 crore in 2023-24, while the fiscal deficit reached ₹11,266 crore. He said that according to the FRBM Act, this limit should have been 3.5 percent, but in Himachal it has reached 5.43 percent. This clearly means that the government is spending and borrowing far more than it is earning.
He said the situation has become so dire that the government is now taking on new loans to repay old ones. He warned that 72 percent of the government’s total income is being spent solely on salaries, pensions, and interest payments. So, where will the money come from for development projects, youth employment, roads, health, and education?
The BJP MP said that the net worth of seven major state-owned enterprises is now negative, meaning losses have mounted so high that their original capital has been exhausted. He said that institutions like the Electricity Board and Transport Corporation are deeply in debt, and the burden will ultimately be passed on to the people of the state.
Harsh Mahajan said that this isn’t just a matter of statistics, but a horrifying reality in Himachal Pradesh. He said that if the public doesn’t wake up today, there will be neither employment for the youth nor budget for development in the future.
He made an emotional appeal to the people of the state, saying that this election is not just about choosing a candidate, but about saving the future of Himachal Pradesh. He said that the Congress government has pushed the state toward disaster, and now it is time for the people to respond democratically.
Harsh Mahajan said that the BJP is reaching out to the public with issues of development, transparency, and public interest, while the Congress party is only spreading false guarantees, economic chaos, and political confusion. He expressed confidence that the people of the state will give a befitting reply to the Congress in this election.
