Shimla, May 17:
The Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) on Sunday claimed a decisive lead over the BJP in the urban local body elections across Shimla district as well as the state.
Hari Krishan Himral, General Secretary of HPCC and Incharge of the State War Room, said that out of 65 Nagar Parishad and Nagar Panchayat seats in Shimla district, Congress had won 40 seats, while the BJP was restricted to 21 seats and four seats were won by Independents.
He claimed that Congress registered clear victories in Narkanda, Chopal, Jubbal, Chirgaon and Nerwa. He further stated that the party was also likely to form councils in Sunni and Theog with the support of Independent candidates.
Highlighting the party’s overall performance in the state, Himral said Congress had secured a clear advantage over the BJP in the urban body elections.
“Out of 47 Nagar Parishads and Nagar Panchayats in the state, Congress has achieved clear victories in 30 places, while in seven others the party is expected to form councils with the support of Independents,” he said.
The Congress leader attributed the party’s performance to the “good governance” of the state government and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s vision focused on strengthening the rural economy and building a self-reliant Himachal Pradesh.
The BJP, however, has also claimed strong performances in several urban local bodies across the state, making the civic poll results politically significant ahead of upcoming local and panchayat elections.
