CPI(M) Alleges Social Prejudice After Leaders Share Meal at Candidate’s Home; Administration Awaits Formal Complaint
Shimla: A controversy has surfaced during the ongoing Panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh after CPI(M) leaders shared a meal at the residence of a Dalit woman candidate contesting from a general seat in Theog subdivision of Shimla district.
The issue gained attention after a video of the visit circulated on social media, with some individuals reportedly objecting to the gathering and terming it an affront to local social traditions. The incident has since triggered a wider debate on caste discrimination and social equality in rural areas.
CPI(M) leaders, including Robin Verma and Sohan Thakur, defended their visit and alleged that the criticism reflected deep-rooted caste prejudice. They claimed that objections were being raised because a Dalit woman was contesting from an unreserved seat and asserted that democratic participation should not be influenced by caste considerations.
Former MLA Rakesh Singha also criticised the reported reactions, stating that any attempt to promote social exclusion or discrimination was contrary to constitutional values and democratic principles.
The controversy has drawn attention from social organisations and political observers, who have expressed concern over allegations of caste-based discrimination during the local body elections.
Meanwhile, Shashank Gupta said that the administration has not received any formal complaint regarding the matter so far. He added that if a complaint related to untouchability, social boycott or discrimination is submitted, appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law.
The incident has reignited discussions on social inclusion, equality and the role of local leadership in addressing caste-based barriers in rural Himachal Pradesh.
