Fruit Processing Training Opens Self-Employment Opportunities for Kullu Women

Kullu: A two-day training camp on fruit and vegetable processing and preservation was organised at the Horticulture Department’s Fruit Processing Centre in Shamshi with the support of DRDA Kullu, with 35 women from the Anar Valley Integrated Farming Association, Badah, participating in the programme.

The training focused on practical techniques for processing and preserving locally available horticultural produce. Under expert guidance, participants learnt to prepare apple and pomegranate juice, apple jam, tomato puree, garlic powder and different types of vegetable pickles.

Participants were also trained in methods to maintain product quality, improve shelf life and safely preserve processed food products.

The Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) and In-charge of the Fruit Processing Centre highlighted the potential of food processing to reduce post-harvest losses and create additional income opportunities for farmers and horticulturists.

He said value addition to locally produced fruits and vegetables could help rural women develop self-employment opportunities and establish collective enterprises.

The participants took keen interest in the practical sessions and said the training had enhanced their skills and confidence to develop and market value-added products.

At the conclusion of the camp, the women thanked DRDA Kullu for organising the programme and said regular skill-based training could help rural women strengthen their livelihoods and contribute to their families’ economic well-being.
