Heavy rainfall continued to disrupt normal life across Himachal Pradesh, with authorities shutting the Chandigarh-Manali highway at several points amid concerns over landslides, falling debris and rising water levels.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state, prompting authorities to step up precautionary measures.
In Kullu, the administration has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in view of the prevailing weather conditions and the risk to students travelling on vulnerable mountain roads.
The closure of the Chandigarh-Manali highway has also hit traffic movement between Chandigarh, Mandi, Kullu and Manali. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and check road conditions before starting their journey.
Officials said restoration work would be undertaken once weather conditions improve and it is safe for machinery and personnel to operate.
The continuing spell of heavy rain has raised concerns over landslides, flash floods and damage to roads and infrastructure in several parts of Himachal Pradesh. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain cautious and follow advisories issued by the district administrations.
