Shimla: Shimla MP Suresh Kashyap on Wednesday called for enhanced passenger amenities at Shimla Airport and wider awareness of the Centre’s BharatNet scheme during separate meetings of the Airport Advisory Committee and the BSNL Advisory Committee.
Kashyap proposed setting up tourism information kiosks at the airport to provide details on hotels, homestays, rest houses and key tourist attractions. He also suggested dedicated counters for Himachali handicrafts and handloom products to promote local artisans and improve visitors’ experience.
Reviewing the airport’s future needs, the MP asked officials to explore expansion possibilities and ensure the availability of doctors and medical staff during flight operations. He also stressed scientific solid waste management in panchayats around the airport to minimise bird-hit risks and enhance flight safety.
During the BSNL Advisory Committee meeting, Kashyap reviewed the progress of the BharatNet project and directed officials to intensify awareness campaigns in rural areas. He said villagers should be informed that FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) broadband connections are available under the scheme for ₹259 per month, with BSNL extending fibre connectivity to villages where at least five households apply together.
He also instructed BSNL officials to improve network quality in rural areas, saying reliable internet access is essential to achieving the Digital India vision.
