Reckong Peo, August 20: The Kinnaur District Road Safety Committee, chaired by Deputy Commissioner and Committee Chairman Dr Amit Kumar Sharma, reviewed recent road accidents, traffic enforcement measures and the implementation of victim relief schemes at a meeting held in Reckong Peo on Thursday.
The committee expressed serious concern over the recent accident involving a pickup vehicle carrying a total of 10 people, including passengers seated in the rear cargo area. While all occupants escaped with their lives, the Deputy Commissioner raised concerns over the illegal practice of transporting passengers in goods vehicles.
An analysis of road accident data for 2026 revealed that 12 accidents in the district this year involved pickup or goods vehicles, resulting in nine deaths.
Taking serious note of the situation, Dr Sharma directed the police and transport departments to launch a special enforcement drive and take strict legal action against drivers and vehicle owners found carrying passengers illegally in goods vehicles.
13 Accident Victims Receive Cashless Treatment
The committee also reviewed the progress of the PM relief cashless treatment scheme. It was informed that 13 people injured in road accidents in Kinnaur have so far received free and cashless treatment under the scheme.
The Deputy Commissioner directed the health and police departments to ensure that accident victims receive immediate emergency medical assistance without any financial barriers.
The meeting also stressed the need for full compliance with the eDAR and iRAD portals to strengthen accident reporting and analysis. Officials were also asked to make greater use of technology to identify repeat traffic offenders.
Superintendent of Police, Kinnaur, Sushil Kumar Sharma, conducted the meeting and said the police department was continuously conducting awareness programmes at vulnerable locations with the support of local residents to help prevent road accidents.
Chief Medical Officer Kinnaur Dr Pushp Raj, SDM Kalpa Praveen Bhardwaj, Deputy Director of Higher Education Kuldeep Singh Dogra and other officials were present at the meeting.
