The political temperature has risen once again over the Women’s Reservation Bill, with the Congress launching a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing it of having an “anti-women mindset.”
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) General Secretary and senior leader Hari Krishan Himral said the Congress has a “golden history” of promoting women’s empowerment, while alleging that the BJP is using the issue purely for electoral gains.
Addressing the media, Himral claimed that the Congress has consistently supported women’s representation and leadership in politics. He pointed out that the country has witnessed women occupying top positions, including party presidents, prime ministers, and chief ministers, under Congress’ tenure.
Taking a swipe at the BJP, he alleged that its approach towards women remains “questionable” and cited past incidents to underline what he described as a lack of sensitivity towards women’s issues. He further remarked that certain cases involving public figures reflect a pattern that raises concerns about the party’s commitment to women’s dignity.
Himral also referred to the history of the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating that it was first introduced during the Congress regime in 1996 and later passed in the Rajya Sabha during the UPA government between 2008 and 2010. However, he claimed that the BJP had opposed the bill in the Lok Sabha at the time.
The Congress leader reiterated that his party remains firmly committed to ensuring greater participation of women in governance, while accusing the BJP of politicising the issue for short-term electoral benefits.
The renewed war of words highlights the continuing political tug-of-war over women’s representation, with both parties seeking to claim credit while questioning each other’s intent.
