Shimla
The tranquil hills of Shimla are set to witness a vibrant exchange of ideas as Bishop Cotton School gears up to host the 29th Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial English Debates. The campus is buzzing with anticipation as some of the country’s brightest young debaters gather for one of India’s most respected inter-school events.

Instituted in 1996, the debates honour Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater, who led the institution from 1863 to 1885. Over nearly three decades, the Slater Debates have evolved into a premier platform for oratory, critical thinking, and intellectual engagement.
This year’s edition features an impressive lineup of leading institutions, including The Assam Valley School, Mallinson Girls’ School, Tyndale Biscoe School, Yadavindra Public School, Auckland House School, St. Thomas’ School, La Martiniere Girls’ College, Vivek High School, Loreto Convent, Sherwood College, The Lawrence School, Wynberg Allen School, and St. Luke’s Senior Secondary School.
Local participation further strengthens the competition, with schools like Tara Hall School joining the lineup, ensuring a diverse mix of perspectives and debating styles.
Over the next five days, participants will engage in nearly 30 debates on contemporary and thought-provoking themes. Beyond competition, the event aims to foster cultural exchange, collaboration, and lasting friendships among students from different parts of the country.
The interaction between visiting and local schools is expected to add depth to discussions, while a series of curated activities promises a holistic experience for all attendees.
Hosting the event, Bishop Cotton School reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing excellence in academics and co-curricular pursuits. The institution extended a warm welcome to all participants, expressing hope that their time in Shimla will be both intellectually enriching and memorable.
